What Is a Spiritual Business Coach - and How Do You Know If You Need One?

Spiritual business coach Amelia Travis sits at her computer, in office with natural light and green plants, on a client call.

Let's be honest: "spiritual business coach" is a phrase that can mean almost anything on the internet.

It can mean someone who helps you manifest clients by journaling (yup, I'm a believer in channeling your future self this way).

It can mean someone who builds your funnel while burning sage (sustainably foraged).

It can mean genuinely transformative mentorship that weaves together strategy, somatics, psychology, and spiritual depth... (spoiler alert - that's me!)

Or it can mean very expensive advice that leaves you exactly where you started, just with a prettier brand, or a complex and confusing 'formula for success' that worked for that person but doesn't have much to do with you.

So before you invest in anything, since you're doing some digging; before you work with anyone (including me), I'll offer here my own clear and honest answer to the question: what does a spiritual business coach actually do, and how do you know if you actually need one?

First: What It Actually Is (aka What I Do)

A spiritual business coach works at the intersection of inner development and outer strategy. The work is rooted in the understanding that how you relate to yourself, your worth, your body, your beliefs, your fears, directly shapes how you build and grow your business.

This is different from a traditional business coach, who primarily focuses on strategy, systems, and metrics. And it's different from a therapist or spiritual director, who focuses primarily on inner healing. A good spiritual business coach holds both: the practical and the profound, without collapsing one into the other.

In my own work, this means drawing from psychology, somatic practices, astrology, yoga philosophy, and twenty years of spiritual study, alongside actual business strategy: offer development, pricing, messaging, marketing, and the nuts and bolts of building something sustainable. Every person who works with me is genuinely unique, with different stories, different goals, different nervous systems, different definitions of success, and the approach reflects that.

This is what we do together in spiritual business coaching:

  1. Clarify your core desires - get specific and bold about what you really want
  2. Identify your north star - the mission and vision that guides all your work, inner and outer
  3. Define specific goals - so we know how to determine if we're moving in the direction of success
  4. Surface conflict patterns and obstacles - gently and honestly reveal what's been holding you back from momentum
  5. Optimize your unique motivation style - figure out what fuels not just your passion, but meaningful action in your work
  6. Align action plan with your neurotype, capacity and lifestyle - get real about how your brain, nervous system, and other life obligations interact with your business plan
  7. Show up for your growth - together, over the course of 6 months or more, building the trust, visibility, and pathways for leads and revenue to flow to you
  8. Keep soul at the center - as you grow, continuing to return to the deeper layer of purpose, meaning, and spiritual calling that informs your vision

Signs You Might Be Ready for This Kind of Support

Not everyone needs a spiritual business coach. But here are some signs that this particular kind of support could be exactly what you're looking for.

You have the gifts, but you're not sure how to package or price them. You know what you do is valuable. Other people tell you it's changed their lives. And yet when someone asks what you charge, something tightens in your chest. You undercharge, over-deliver, and burn out. This is a worth conversation as much as a strategy conversation, and it needs both.

You keep starting and stopping. The pattern is painfully familiar: inspiration, momentum, resistance, stop. Another idea, another start, another stall. This isn't a discipline problem. It's almost always a nervous system and safety problem. Your system isn't regulated enough to tolerate the visibility and vulnerability that building something requires.

You're navigating a big transition. Leaving corporate. Pivoting your brand. Returning to work after loss or illness. Stepping into a new expression of your gifts after years of doing it a different way. Big transitions require both strategic clarity and soul-level support. Having someone hold the map while you find your footing is invaluable.

You're building something values-aligned in a world that rewards the opposite. You don't want to use urgency tactics, manufactured scarcity, or hustle culture metrics to grow. You want a business that is ethical, accessible, sustainable, and genuinely in service. Finding your way there practically, not just philosophically, is its own kind of work.

You're tired of generic formulas that don't fit you. You've done the courses. You've followed the frameworks. And they keep producing results that feel slightly off, like wearing someone else's clothes. That's because most business education is built for a specific type of brain, body, and life context that simply isn't universal. If you've always felt like the strategies that work for everyone else don't quite work for you, that's worth paying attention to.

What to Look For, and What to Watch Out For

The spiritual coaching space has expanded rapidly, and with it, a fair amount of noise. Here's what I'd encourage you to look for when considering any coach or mentor:

Real experience. Not just a certification or higher-level degree (though training matters, and ideally, they have both), but equally essential is the actual lived experience the coach has building businesses over time. Ask how long they've been in business. Ask about their failures and pivots, not just their wins.

Transparent ethics. A coach who is operating in integrity will never pressure you, manufacture false urgency, or promise specific outcomes they can't guarantee. They'll be clear about what they offer and honest about their scope of practice. They'll refer you elsewhere when someone else is a better fit.

A framework that includes the body. Business challenges rooted in fear, unworthiness, and nervous system dysregulation can't be solved by strategy alone. Any coach working at the level of soul-led business should have some grounding in somatic or body-based approaches.

Genuine resonance. Trust yourself. Does this person's work, their writing, their way of speaking about what they do: does it land in your body as true? That resonance matters as much as credentials.

Is It Worth the Investment?

The women who come to work with me are often sitting with this exact question. What if it doesn't work? What if I can't afford it? What if I invest and end up in the same place? These fears are real and they deserve to be honored, not bypassed.

What I can offer is this: the women who see the most profound shifts from this work are the ones who come in ready to show up for themselves, come what may. They're not always 'perfectly' prepared, but they are genuinely willing to be seen, to look at what's getting in the way, to try something different, and most importantly, they're willing to learn to TRUST themselves fully as the primary authority on what's right for their business and their life.

If that's you, btw, I'd love to talk - you can book a call with me here.
